Gain Muscle & Lose Fat at the Same Time?

In order to look really, really good, this requires two things.

  • Good level of muscle mass
  • Low level of body fat

Let’s talk about fat loss first.

To achieve fat loss, you need to be in a calorie deficit.

A calorie deficit results in weight loss, but that isn’t necessarily fat loss.

You could be losing muscle as well.

To make sure it’s mostly fat loss, you need to eat enough protein and…

Strength training will help your body retain muscle.

You also have to have the RIGHT calorie deficit.

If you go too extreme and too low in calories, you will lose muscle.

You really just need to be in a slight deficit.

So how can you be in a deficit to lose fat while simultaneously adding muscle mass?

The key is to divide your day into two periods.

  • Fasting during the first part of the day breaks down fat and uses fat for fuel (catabolic in a beneficial way).
  • Later in the day, you do an intense strength training workout followed by a fest (creating an anabolic environment to gain muscle).

So technically, you aren’t gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously.

But over the course of 24 hours, you lose a bit of fat and gain a bit of muscle.

Typically the beginner to intermediate clients we work with will lose about 15 to 20 pounds of fat and gain anywhere between 4 to 5 pounds of muscle in about 4-6 months.

The easiest way to tell if you are gaining muscle?

If you gain strength, it is proof that you are gaining muscle.

The stronger you get in that 5-10 rep range, the more lean muscle you are going to add to your body.

Gaining 4-5 pounds of muscle may not sound like a lot, but when this muscle is targeted to the right areas while getting leaner… It makes a world of difference.
