The Ideal Free Testosterone Level in Men

I think every man should get their testosterone levels checked, even if you are in your 20’s.

The reason for this is you want to establish a baseline.

So later in life…

When you are in your 30’s or 40’s, you can compare it to where you were when you were younger.

When you have it checked, definitely get your free testosterone checked.

You can go to your doctor and request this…

But often times they think getting this checked isn’t necessary.

You also want to look at these variables.

  • Estrogen: Excess estrogen can make it hard to add muscle and get lean.
  • DHT: It’s a very androgenic hormone and when it is high, your Free T should be high as well.
  • SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin): It’s a protein that binds to certain sex hormones in your blood. It binds the strongest to DHT among all sex hormones. When SHGB binds to DHT, it makes it unavailable for your cells to use. Bad for Free T.
  • LH(Luteinizing Hormone): In men, LH causes the testes to produce testosterone. LH levels can affect testosterone levels by sending signals to the pituitary gland and the testes. Guys who take steroids destroy their body’s ability to produce LH. It takes up to 9 months to come back after taking steroids.
  • FSH(Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): FSH stimulates sperm production by acting on specific cells in the testes. FSH works together with LH and testosterone to ensure that the male reproductive system works as intended.
  • IGF-1: Interacts with testosterone to stimulate muscle growth and improve strength. It can also enhance testosterone production.
  • Total T: The total testosterone in your blood. It’s good to know but not as important as your Free T numbers.
  • Free T: Free T is the amount of testosterone that is not bound to other proteins. Free T levels are a better predictor of testosterone deficiency symptoms than levels of Total T.

You can maintain high levels of testosterone well into your 30’s, 40’s, and beyond.

  • Ideal Total Testosterone Level = 600-900 ng/dl
  • Ideal Free Testosterone Level = 18-22 ng/dl
