Recently I was stuck at the same weight for six days.
Walking every day. Hitting my calories. Doing everything right.
The scale didn’t care.
If I was NOT as experienced, I might have panicked.
- Dropped my calories
- Added more cardio
- Maybe even questioned if something was wrong
But I’ve been through this enough times to know better.
I knew exactly what was coming.
The next morning I woke up almost 3 pounds lighter.

It happened overnight.
This is the “Whoosh Effect.”
And understanding it might save you from quitting right when you’re about to break through.
The Hidden Reality of Fat Loss
I first learned about this concept from Lyle McDonald a little over a decade ago.
His hypothesis:
When fat cells release stored triglycerides (fat), they don’t immediately shrink. They temporarily refill with water.
Here’s how he describes it:
“After fat cells had been emptied of stored triglyceride, they would temporarily refill with water (glycerol attracts water, which might be part of the mechanism). So there would be no immediate change in size, body weight or appearance. Then, after some time frame, the water would get dropped, the fat cells would shrink. A weird way of looking at it might be that the fat loss suddenly becomes ‘apparent’. That is, the fat was emptied and burned off days or weeks ago but until the water is dropped, nothing appears to have happened.“
I’ve experienced this firsthand.

And I’ve seen it happen with countless people I’ve coached over the years.
Why Your Body Holds Onto Water
Your body is smart.
Fat cells fill with water to maintain their size, because your body wants to store excess calories as fat as easily as possible.
Keeping fat cells expanded (with water) makes it easier to refill them if food becomes plentiful again.
It’s a survival mechanism.
Your fat cells essentially hold onto this water until your body is convinced you won’t be storing fat again anytime soon.
Then the whoosh happens.
- The water drops
- The fat cells shrink
- And suddenly you’re 2-3 lbs lighter overnight
A telltale sign you’re about to whoosh is when your fat feels a little softer and squishier.
What Triggers the Whoosh?
Here are some things that can release the stored water:
- Higher carb intake: Carbs counteract the effect of cortisol, and counteracting cortisol can help the body release water
- Lower training intensity: Backing off training slightly reduces cortisol and signals recovery.
- Alcohol: It’s a mild diuretic (not recommending you drink heavily, but it explains why people often look leaner after a night out).
I’ve noticed this repeatedly.

People often look their best after a night of slightly higher carbs or calories and a couple of drinks.
The carbs fill the muscles with glycogen. The body releases the water.
You finally see the results of weeks of discipline.
Is the Whoosh Effect Real?
This hypothesis hasn’t been proven definitively by research.
Lyle has been looking for a study that fully explains this rapid water release for 20+ years.
But many of us believe he’s correct.
The mechanism makes too much sense.

And the anecdotal evidence is overwhelming.
And even if the fat cells don’t fill with water like this, the body can hold water and fluctuate 3-4 pounds.
And so, when your body’s holding water temporarily, it can play tricks on your mind.
You just have to stay the course.
The main takeaway?
If the scale isn’t moving but you’re locked in with your diet and training…
You’re probably losing fat. You just haven’t observed it yet.
Your diet is working.
You need to trust the process and be patient.
Be f*ckn patient.
Fat Loss isn’t Always Linear
Your body has mechanisms that can delay the visible results of your hard work.
The whoosh effect explains why you might be stuck at the same weight for days or weeks… then suddenly drop several pounds overnight.
Stay the course.
Trust the deficit.
And when that whoosh finally hits?
You’ll be glad you didn’t quit.
